Collegians at U23 Worlds: Nwachukwu earns silver, Larramendy captures bronze

Adaugo Nwachukwu added another world medal to her collection on Friday night.

The McKendree star, a three-time collegiate national champion, claimed a silver medal at 62 kilograms at the 2026 U23 World Championships at the Thomas & Mack Center. Nwachukwu fell to Ukraine's Iryna Bondar, a two-time age-group world champion, by 10-0 technical superiority in the gold-medal match.

Bondar struck first with an early takedown and wasted no time capitalizing on it. The Ukrainian followed with four turns to put the match away.

The silver medal is Nwachukwu's second age-group world medal. She also earned a bronze medal at the 2022 U20 World Championships.

Nwachukwu's run to the final was one of the stories of the tournament for Team USA. She rolled through her first three opponents by technical superiority without surrendering a point before grinding out a low-scoring semifinal win over Mexico's Melanie Jimenez Villalba.

Iowa's Reese Larramendy capped off the night for Team USA with a bronze medal at 65 kilograms.

Larramendy, a 2024 NCWWC national champion and 2026 NCAA runner-up, bounced back from a semifinal loss to defeat Türkiye's Ayse Erkan 10-4 in the bronze-medal match. The Hawkeye grabbed the early lead with a four-point move off a strong double-leg attack and never looked back.

The bronze medal is the first age-group world medal of Larramendy's career.

The United States finished second in the team standings with 117 points. Team USA earned six medals, tying first-place Ukraine for the most of any country in the field. North Central College's Taylor Graveman finished 10th at 72 kilograms to round out the American scoring.

Ukraine won the team title with 147 points, 30 points ahead of the United States, after scoring in nine of the 10 weight classes. Japan was third with 108 points.
