Highly ranked lightweight Sturgill commits to Iowa
Iowa women's wrestling has added another nationally accomplished prospect to its 2027 recruiting class.
Ryleigh Sturgill, one of the nation's top lightweight recruits, has committed to Iowa. The Baylor School standout in Chattanooga, Tenn., has established herself as one of the country's best young wrestlers in the lower weights through a series of standout performances at Fargo, Who's Number One and other national events.
Sturgill won a Fargo title at 100 pounds in 2025 and followed that with a victory at FloWrestling's Who's Number One later that year. She also gained experience against college competition at the Midlands Women's Championships, placing third at 103 pounds. She returned to Fargo in 2026 at 105 pounds and finished third with a 6-1 record, winning all six of her matches by technical fall without surrendering a single point. She has also shown versatility across styles, capturing championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the 2025 Frank E. Rader Southeast Regional.
At Baylor, Sturgill won a Tennessee girls state championship at 100 pounds as a freshman in 2024. She later chose to forfeit her girls season as a sophomore to compete for Baylor's boys team, going 11-8 at 113 pounds in a move that helped her team reach the state duals championships. She also finished as the National Prep runner-up at 100 pounds in 2025.
Sturgill's connection to Iowa predates the recruiting process. She attended Iowa wrestling camps while growing up and took an official visit to Iowa City in September as part of a highly regarded group of recruits visiting the program. Her older brother Hunter wrestles at Indiana, where he went 19-7 as a redshirt freshman in 2025-26 and earned a U20 Greco-Roman Pan American silver medal.
Sturgill joins a strong Iowa 2027 recruiting class that already includes Eve Skrocki, Brooke Huffman and Larra Mullin.
