Bella Mir's bid for a UFC contract was derailed Tuesday night in the biggest upset in Dana White's Contender Series history.

Alex Apodaca handed Mir the first loss of her professional MMA career, earning a unanimous decision in the women's bantamweight main event at the Meta APEX. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Apodaca, who earned a UFC contract with the victory.

Mir entered the fight as the largest betting favorite in Dana White's Contender Series history -- listed as high as a -6000 favorite at some sportsbooks, with Apodaca reaching +1700. The 23-year-old Mir is a two-time college national finalist for North Central College and the inaugural NCAA women's wrestling champion at 145 pounds. She is also a U.S. Open freestyle champion. Mir had won each of her first four professional MMA fights, three by submission, while simultaneously competing at an elite level in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Mir's wrestling credentials made her Contender Series appearance one of the most anticipated in recent memory. She captured the 145-pound title at the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships in March, pinning Iowa's Reese Larramendy at 2:26 in the championship match after building a 5-0 lead -- recording the first pin in an NCAA women's wrestling championship final. After finishing as the national runner-up in 2025, Mir returned this past season and went 15-1 en route to the NCAA title.

She then transitioned immediately into freestyle and won the 68-kilogram title at the U.S. Open in April as the No. 4 seed, pinning Iowa State freshman Greta Brus and collegiate All-American Zoey Lints, posting an 11-0 technical fall over All=American Alissa Caltagirone and knocking off NAIA national champion and four-time All-American Latifah McBryde 12-7 in the semifinals before rolling past age-group world champion Jasmine Robinson 10-0 in the finals. The title secured Mir a place at Final X and a matchup with Olympic silver medalist and 2025 world bronze medalist Kennedy Blades for the U.S. Senior World Team spot at 68 kilograms. That series was rescheduled for Sept. 25 in Columbus, Ohio -- meaning Mir still has one of the biggest wrestling matches of her career ahead of her despite Tuesday's setback.

Mir also represented the United States at the 2023 U20 World Championships and 2025 U23 World Championships and won the 2023 Grand Prix of Spain. She is the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and became the UFC's first collegiate NIL ambassador in 2023.

On Tuesday night, Apodaca found a way to neutralize Mir's strongest weapon. Mir appeared to take the opening round behind her striking and pressure, but Apodaca settled into the fight as it progressed, defending Mir's grappling attempts and finding increasing success on the feet. Her jab and body attacks helped turn the momentum in the second round, and she continued to make Mir work in the third. Mir eventually worked onto Apodaca's back late in the fight but was unable to produce a submission or decisive sequence before time expired.

The result drops Mir to 4-1 as a professional. Unlike most fighters leaving the Contender Series without a UFC contract, Mir already has another major championship opportunity on the calendar -- a Final X showdown with one of the best women's freestyle wrestlers in the world.
