Seidel, Sinclair claim U20 world titles
Team USA went two-for-two in its first men's freestyle medal opportunities Friday night at the 2026 U20 World Championships, with Virginia Tech's Aaron Seidel and Missouri's Aeoden Sinclair both leaving Bratislava, Slovakia, as world champions.
Seidel set the tone at 61 kilograms, shutting out U20 Asian champion Bekassyl Assambek of Kazakhstan 7-0 in the gold medal match. The Hokie All-American controlled the action throughout, consistently forcing Assambek toward the boundary while maintaining a relentless offensive pace. The performance capped a remarkable international debut. Seidel rolled through the preliminary rounds with three technical superiorties and a pin before closing with the championship victory. Along the way he defeated three wrestlers with age-group world medals, putting together one of the most impressive U20 runs of the tournament.
Sinclair followed with a gold of his own at 86 kilograms, but his path required another comeback. The Tiger All-American fell behind Russia's Akhmad Mukutov 4-0 in the finals before steadily working his way back, scoring three step-outs, two takedowns and a caution point to turn the early deficit into an 8-4 victory. It marked the second straight match in which Sinclair had to erase a significant early hole -- his composure carried him through Thursday's semifinal comeback as well. A two-time age-group world team member, Sinclair navigated a difficult bracket that included U20 Asian bronze medalist Natsura Okazawa of Japan, U20 Asian bronze medalist Askhab Khajiyev of Kazakhstan and 2024 U17 world champion Abolfazl Shamsipour Hajivand of Iran.
With Seidel and Sinclair both claiming gold, the United States closed the first men's freestyle group with a perfect 50 team points. Russia sits second with 35 points, followed by Kazakhstan with 30. Japan and Iran round out the current top five.
Bassett, Cortez reach finals
Virginia Tech incoming freshman Bo Bassett and Cornell's Isaiah Cortez are both headed to the U20 world championship finals Friday in Bratislava, giving the United States a chance at two more gold medals in men's freestyle.
Bassett delivered the most emphatic result of the night at 65 kilograms, pinning Russia's Zalimkhan Umarov in the opening period to continue a dominant tournament. The U17 world champion and U20 world bronze medalist has collected bonus points in all four of his matches, opening with first-period technical superiorities over Yeraly Askerbek of Kazakhstan and Haci Zade of Türkiye before needing just 41 seconds to pin 2022 U17 world bronze medalist Bashir Verdiyev of Azerbaijan in the quarterfinals. Bassett will face Japan's Takuto Osedo for the U20 world title.
Cortez took a much different route to the 57 kilograms final, grinding out a 4-3 semifinal victory over 2024 U17 world champion Ulugbek Rashidov of Uzbekistan. With little separating the two wrestlers, Cortez created the decisive sequence early in the second period, converting a takedown and immediately adding a turn for four points -- enough to send the 2024 U20 world Greco-Roman silver medalist into another world final. Earlier in the tournament, Cortez posted a 13-2 technical superiority over 2024 U17 Asian bronze medalist Chengtao Wang of China and shut out Kazakhstan's Nurassyl Assambek 6-0. Cortez will face 2023 U17 European champion Magomed Magomedov of Russia for gold.
Virginia Tech's Ryan Burton came within one late scramble of joining them in the finals at 79 kilograms. Trailing senior Asian champion Keyvan Gharehdaghi of Japan on criteria in the closing seconds, Burton attacked from a quad-pod position near the edge. He attempted to pull Gharehdaghi over the top as time expired, but officials awarded two points to Gharehdaghi. The call survived a video challenge, sealing a 5-2 semifinal loss for Burton.
Iowa State commit Jimmy Mastny received good news at 92 kilograms when he was pulled into repechage after the wrestler who defeated him advanced to the final. Mastny will face two-time U20 European champion Artur Togoev of Russia in Saturday morning's repechage, with a victory keeping his bronze medal hopes alive.
