Rob Koll has agreed to a three-year contract extension at North Carolina, keeping him in Chapel Hill through June 30, 2029. UNC's Board of Trustees approved the terms in late July.

Koll, a 1988 national champion for the Tar Heels, became Carolina's seventh head coach in program history on Aug. 31, 2023, returning to his alma mater after two seasons at Stanford and 28 years as head coach at Cornell. In three seasons leading the program, Koll has guided 19 individual NCAA Championship qualifiers and three All-America finishes. Bryce Hepner won the 165-pound ACC title in 2026 -- the program's first conference champion since 2023 and the first 165-pound ACC title for UNC since 2009. Lachlan McNeil earned All-America honors in 2024-25 with a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds, becoming the sixth Tar Heel in program history with three or more All-America finishes.

In his first season, Koll guided Carolina to its most dual victories since 2019-20. In 2024-25, the Tar Heels clinched a share of the ACC regular season title -- the 19th in program history and first since 2018-19 -- and qualified eight wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, the most since 2021. Last season, Carolina opened 6-0 in dual action, the best start since 2005-06, defeated No. 12 Northern Iowa on the road in their highest-ranked road victory in nearly a decade and sent four freshmen to the NCAA Championships -- the most in program history.

Before returning to Chapel Hill, Koll spent 28 seasons at Cornell, compiling a 317-101-5 dual record, including a 125-9-1 mark in Ivy League action. His Big Red teams won 20 Ivy League championships, produced 177 NCAA qualifiers, 71 All-Americans and 16 individual national champions. For 17 straight seasons, at least three Cornell wrestlers reached the All-America podium under his watch. He then spent two seasons at Stanford, where he mentored three All-Americans and three Pac-12 champions and helped the Cardinal to a top-20 NCAA finish in 2022.

As a competitor at UNC from 1985-88, Koll compiled a 155-20-1 record -- the most wins in program and ACC history -- was a three-time ACC champion at 158 pounds and won the program's second ever individual national championship in 1988.
