No. 1 Lemus commits to Wayland Baptist
Leilani Lemus, one of the most decorated girls' wrestlers in California high school history, has announced her commitment to continue her wrestling career at Wayland Baptist. The Clovis High School senior won four CIF state titles, sharing the news in a local television segment on KSEE 24 that posted on social media by Inside the Pod w/Lou Podcast.
The Clovis High School senior closed out her prep career as a four-time CIF state champion. She won her first state championship in 2023 as a 14-year-old freshman, becoming the first female state champion in Clovis High School history. This past March, she completed the sweep at 170 pounds, pinning Upland's Sophia Lopez in 34 seconds in the championship final and finishing her senior state tournament run with four consecutive pins, none lasting longer than two minutes.
Her dominance wasn't confined to California. Lemus closed her senior season ranked the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 170 pounds nationally, capping a high school career that included elite results against national-caliber competition beyond the state series.
Lemus joins a Wayland Baptist women's program that is coming off a fifth-place finish at the NAIA Women's Wrestling Championships under head coach Stryder Davis.
