Cornell wrestling has named Zach Tanelli as associate head coach, head coach Mike Grey announced.

Tanelli brings nearly two decades of coaching experience across four major Division I conferences to Ithaca. Most recently, he served as associate head coach at Virginia Tech, where he made an immediate impact working with the lightweights. In his first season with the Hokies, Eddie Ventresca and Connor McGonagle earned All-America honors and ACC titles. The following season, freshmen Aaron Seidel and Collin Gaj both earned All-America honors under his guidance.

Before Virginia Tech, Tanelli spent eight seasons as head coach at Columbia from 2016-24, elevating the Lions to new heights in the EIWA. During his tenure, Columbia set program records for most NCAA qualifiers in a season, most Division I dual meet wins in a season, highest team placement at the EIWA Tournament and most team points at the EIWA Championships. The Lions finished in the top five at the EIWA Tournament in three consecutive seasons and produced five of the nine EIWA individual champions in school history. In his final season, Lennox Wolak became Columbia's first All-American since 2013 and sixth in program history, while Wolak and Aaron Ayzerov both captured EIWA titles — the first time Columbia had two tournament champions since 1935. The Lions also posted 18 individual Academic All-Americans during his tenure and recorded their highest-ranked dual meet win ever with a victory over No. 15 Northern Iowa.

Prior to Columbia, Tanelli spent two years as an assistant at Purdue after beginning his coaching career at Hofstra, where he served as head assistant coach and interim head coach.

As a competitor at Wisconsin, Tanelli placed fourth at the 2009 NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors. A three-time NCAA qualifier for the Badgers, he won the 141-pound Midlands Championship during a 31-win senior season and was a Big Ten finalist. He earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Wisconsin in 2009 and a master's degree in higher educational leadership and policy studies from Hofstra in 2012.
