Three-time All-American Shapiro commits to Nebraska
Meyer Shapiro, one of the most accomplished middleweights in college wrestling, has committed to Nebraska.
Shapiro spent three seasons at Cornell, compiling a 62-10 record at 157 pounds and earning All-America honors in each of his three NCAA appearances -- placing third in 2024, fifth in 2025 and eighth in 2026. He was named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year in back-to-back seasons and went 18-4 this past year, with all four losses coming in the postseason, including a medical forfeit in the seventh-place bout. He was Cornell's only NCAA placer in 2026.
Shapiro entered the transfer portal in April with a year of eligibility remaining, immediately becoming one of the most coveted names available. Nebraska hosted him on a visit in May and emerged as the frontrunner, ultimately landing him for his final season.
The move carries some symmetry. At the 2025 NCAA Championships, Nebraska's Antrell Taylor eliminated Shapiro in the semifinals at 157 pounds en route to Taylor's national title. Shapiro will now train alongside Taylor and a Husker program that has been among the most aggressive in the transfer portal this offseason, also adding All-Americans Anthony Echemendia and Vincent Robinson.
Before Cornell, Shapiro was the nation's top-ranked recruit and capped his career at Wyoming Seminary with a national prep championship at 145 pounds. On the freestyle circuit, he is a multiple-time age-group world champion, winning U20 gold at 70 kilograms in 2023 and cadet world gold at 65 kilograms in 2021.
Shapiro could have up to two seasons (with the new NCAA ruling) to chase the national title that has eluded him -- this time in a Nebraska singlet.
