Barber retires as Air Force head coach, transitions to athletic department role

Sam Barber has retired as head wrestling coach at the United States Air Force Academy after 18 seasons leading the program, the school announced Wednesday. Barber has been named Associate Athletic Director for Development and Strategy, transitioning from the mat to a role focused on strategic initiatives across the Air Force Athletics department.

Barber leaves behind one of the most successful stretches in program history. The Falcons posted three NCAA top-25 finishes under his watch, highlighted by an 18th-place finish in 2023 that tied all-time NCAA Championships leader Oklahoma State. Air Force also finished 21st in 2024 and 25th in 2026. Barber guided three All-Americans, most notably Wyatt Hendrickson, who finished third in back-to-back seasons, and Carter Nogle, who battled to fifth place after a first-round loss as the No. 18 seed. Of his 33 national qualifiers, 13 came in the last five seasons. The Falcons produced two Big 12 champions with Outstanding Wrestler honors and 43 Big 12 Championship medalists.

Beyond the collegiate level, Barber helped 11 cadet-athletes compete internationally and was instrumental in establishing the Air Force Regional Training Center. The pinnacle of his international coaching career came when he served as head coach of the U23 World Championship Team, which won the nation's first-ever U23 freestyle world championship team title. Hendrickson was one of four team members to win individual world titles.

Academic excellence was a hallmark of Barber's program. His Falcons earned a 98-percent Graduation Success Rate, produced 23 NWCA Scholar All-Americans and earned academic all-conference recognition more than 100 times. Five former Air Force wrestlers have gone on to attend medical school, with many others now serving as Air Force and Space Force officers around the world.

In his new role, Barber will focus on organizational development, strategic planning, leadership education, coach and staff development and stakeholder engagement across all Air Force athletic programs.
