Iowa State adds McKendree transfer Persaeus Gomez
Iowa State women's wrestling has added its second McKendree transfer, securing a commitment from Persaeus Gomez, head coach Alli St. John announced. The Cyclones' incoming roster now stands at nine student-athletes.
Gomez, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., competed at 131 pounds for the national champion Bearcats last season before entering the transfer portal. She joins Gabriella Gomez -- no relation -- who also transferred to Iowa State from McKendree.
Persaeus Gomez arrives in Ames with an extensive resume. She became the first four-time undefeated Colorado girls state champion at Pomona High School, where she was coached by her father, VĂctor, and helped lead the program to a Colorado girls state team championship in 2024. She was ranked as a top-20 recruit in the Class of 2024.
On the national stage, Gomez was a Fargo Junior Nationals champion in 2022 after placing third in 2021 and reached the finals at Women's Nationals that same year. She is also a U17 Pan-American champion and received Colorado's Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award in her senior season at Pomona.
Iowa State is building toward its first NCAA season in 2027-28 under St. John. The Cyclones have assembled one of the most intriguing rosters in women's college wrestling, also adding NAIA national champions Piper Fowler and Christianah Ogunsanya from William Penn, Campbellsville transfer Makennah Craft, U20 World fifth-place finisher Daniella Nugent from Oklahoma State, four-time Iowa state champion Molly Allen, three-time Illinois state champion Gabriella Gomez, Iowa native Greta Brus and Arizona standout Brooklyn Perez.
