Fry named 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestler of the Year

The Open Mat presents awards annually in three categories for each division of college wrestling at the conclusion of the season. Awards are presented for Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year and Wrestler of the Year.

Joziah Fry of Johnson & Wales was dominant all season long, going 43-0 en route to winning his third straight national championship at 125 pounds. He also helped lead JWU win its first national team title.

On Thursday night, Fry was named 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestler of the Year by The Open Mat.

Fry, a native of Coventry, Rhode Island, not only finished with an undefeated record during the 2024-25 season but earned bonus-point victories in all but two matches. Of his 43 wins, 22 came by technical fall and 12 by pin. He led the JWU wrestling team with 165 takedowns. Fry claimed regular season tournament titles at the Ithaca Invitational, Roger Williams Invitational, New Standard Invitational and Scott Viera Open.

He won a Region I title with three technical falls and a victory by injury default. At the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, Fry cruised to the finals with bonus-point victories in his first three matches. He opened with a 21-6 technical fall over Lycoming's Kaden Majcher. In the quarterfinals, Fry picked up a 21-7 major decision over Quintin Wolbert of UW-La Crosse. He followed it up with another major decision over Mason Barrett of Averett, 11-3.

In the finals, with the national team title hanging in the balance, Fry faced another undefeated wrestler, Christian Guzman of North Central in a rematch of the 2024 NCAA finals. Guzman scored the opening takedown, but Fry battled back to win 10-5. With the victory, Fry became a three-time NCAA champion with a career record of 122-1 at JWU.
