NCAA finalist Welsh transferring to Penn State
NCAA finalist Rocco Welsh has a new home.
Welsh, a 2024 NCAA runner-up at 174 pounds as a true freshman for Ohio State, announced on Sunday that he will be transferring to Penn State. He is coming off a redshirt season.
He made the announcement on BASCHAMANIA, a wrestling podcast hosted by Justin Basch.
"I just feel like in order for me to be my best, I just have to be in a room with the best partners," Welsh told Basch. "Not everyone does, though. Some people can get it done with no partners. But I think for me I need to be in the room with the best guys who are pushing me. "
Penn State is coming off its fourth straight national team title. The Nittany Lions broke the tournament scoring record and finished with 10 All-Americans, which had only been accomplished one other time in NCAA wrestling history.
"They accomplished all the stuff that I want to accomplish there," Welsh said. "I think it's going to just be a confidence thing. There are other guys in the program doing the stuff that you want to accomplish so it can be done there. That's really what I'm excited about."
Welsh said he plans to wrestle at 184 pounds for the Nittany Lions next season. He will will wrestle at 79 kilograms for the U.S. Open in April.
He compiled a 26-6 record as a true freshman, with two losses coming to Penn State's Carter Starocci, now a five-time NCAA champion.
The Waynesburg, Pennsylvania native redshirted this past season and won three tournament titles, finishing the season with a 15-0 record. He also competed in freestyle, earning a bronze medal at the 2025 Zagreb Open in Croatia.
Welsh was a four-time Pennsylvania state finalist and two-time state champion. He was a Super 32 Challenge champion and two-time Ironman champion.
