Hendrickson stuns Steveson, Starocci wins fifth crown as PSU cruises to team title
PHILADELPHIA -- Wyatt Hendrickson shocked the college wrestling world on Saturday night in Philadelphia.
The Oklahoma State big man came from behind late to defeat Olympic champion Gable Steveson of Minnesota 5-4 in the final match of the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Steveson struck first with a takedown in the opening period to grab a 3-0 lead before Hendrickson escaped to cut it to 3-1. Hendrickson inched closer with another escape in the second period. Gable quickly escaped in the third period to extend his lead to 4-2. With 30 second remaining, Hendrickson used some fakes before firing off a shot and switching off to a double leg to secure a takedown with 20 seconds remaining, which gave him a one-point lead. He then rode out Steveson to earn the victory in one of the biggest upsets in college wrestling history.
"It's just kind of having that confidence and that attitude when you go out there, that mentality, that you want to be a champion, and I think you could see that from the very get-go," said Hendrickson. "I wasn't out there to concede points. I was out there to get points and win that match, and I did."
Hendrickson, nicknamed "Captain America," was a multiple-time NCAA All-American at Air Force before transferring to Oklahoma State. U.S. military academies do not honor COVID-19 seasons of eligibility so Hendrickson needed to find a new home to use his final season of eligibility. He chose Oklahoma State last spring in large part because of the program's first-year head coach David Taylor, an Olympic champion and one of America's greatest wrestlers ever.
"Coach Taylor was one of my biggest role models when I was kid," said Hendrickson. "I remember watching him in the national finals in the basement with my dad. Whenever I got that call it was pretty unreal. It was a really special time."
Taylor said Hendrickson believed he could be the NCAA champion.
"You just have to believe," said Taylor. "It's easy to get caught up in what you can and what you can't do. Wyatt believed. Honestly, not one time this year did we talk about wrestling Gable. From the moment he got there, it was just, let's just become a better wrestler."
Carter Starocci of Penn State made history, becoming the first five-time NCAA Division I champion. Starocci edged returning NCAA champion Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa 4-3 in the finals at 184 pounds. Starocci's first four NCAA titles came at 174 pounds. He was named Outstanding Wrestler of the event.
"I never want to downplay the moment," said Starocci, who finished his career with a record of 107-4 and 29-0 this season. "It's always cool but one thing that Coach Cael really instills in us that it's just preparation for the next thing."
Starocci's history-making moment kicked off the finals, which he didn't understand.
"I'm not sure why ESPN elected for the 184-pound match to be the first one," said Starocci. "I mean, you have a guy going for his fifth title and you have the reigning champ. and I think whoever wins that match is the Hodge Trophy winner. We have been dominant all year and you put that match first ... It kind of makes me laugh and giggle."
Starocci's win helped Penn State break the team points record for a national championship, eclipsing their own mark of 172.5 set in 2024.
Penn State finished with 177 points, 60 points ahead of runner-up Nebraska (117 points). Oklahoma State was third with 102.5 points, while Iowa was fourth with 81 points. Minnesota and Ohio State tied for fifth with 51.5 points. It was PSU's 12th national title in 14 seasons.
"Really happy for our team," said Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson. "Proud of them. They went out here and really competed hard this weekend against obviously great competition. All 10 guys gave a great effort. Super proud of them. Happy for them."
In addition to breaking the points record, the Nittany Lions finished with 10 All-Americans, tying a record set by Minnesota in 2001.
"Ten All-Americans obviously is super hard to do," said Sanderson. "You had two guys coming in here with injuries. Obviously, if everybody is talking about the expectations ... and this is the point record or whatever it is. We don't talk about that stuff. But kids live on their phones so they are seeing it and hearing it all the time. It's hard. Being expected to do something and do it is probably the toughest thing in sports. But that also makes it a fun challenge."
Penn State crowned a second national champion on Saturday night with top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink winning the title at 165 pounds after finishing runner-up last season as a freshman. He won a hard-fought battle over Iowa's Mike Caliendo, 8-2.
"It's not all about being a national champion," said Mesenbrink, who finished the season with a perfect 30-0 record. "It's about your performance. I'm so lucky to have been brough up through that through AWA and most importantly my dad. And then go to Penn State and even more so it's about performance."
Iowa crowned a national champion at 197 pounds with Stephan Buchanan claiming the title with a 5-2 win over Penn State freshman Josh Barr. Buchanan started his college wrestling career at Wyoming, where he spent three seasons and earned two All-America honors. He then transferred to Oklahoma, where he became an All-American in 2024. Last year he made the decision to transfer to Iowa and finish his college wrestling career as a Hawkeye.
"God has a plan and he put me in Iowa for a reason," said Buchanan. "I never really loved the sport. I did it because I was good. In Iowa I began to start loving this sport and that changes everything about it."
Ohio State's Jesse Mendez repeated as NCAA champion, defeating Nebraska's Brock Hardy 12-9 in the finals at 141 pounds. Mendez found himself in a 5-0 hole early after giving up a takedown and two nearfall points to Hardy, but stormed back for the victory.
"First, I want to shout out Hardy," said Mendez. "He's a class act, man. I would consider us good friends. Man, he's just one hell of a competitor. He's going to go. I'm going to go. He took the lead early, 5-0, but I stay poised. I stayed to the game plan. I just got to my attacks and it ended up working out in my favor."
After Nebraska's Hardy fell at 141 pounds, the Huskers crowned back-to-back champions with Ridge Lovett and Antrell Taylor winning titles at 149 pounds and 157 pounds respectively.
Lovett, a two-time Big Ten champion, won a tight 1-0 battle over Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech, denying the Hokie wrestler of repeat national titles.
He says there is just respect, no animosity, between him and his mat rival Henson.
"He wants it just as bad as I do," Lovett said of Henson. "Today I was fortunate to be the one who came out on top. Last year it was him. There's no animosity there. There's respect among competitors. I want to see him do well. I know that he wants to see me do well."
Taylor defeated Purdue's Joey Blaze 4-2 in the championship at 157 pounds. It was the fourth meeting of the season between the two wrestlers, and the third meeting in two weeks.
Third-place finisher Oklahoma State ended the tournament with two NCAA champions. In addition to Hendrickson winning the title, Dean Hamiti earned the championship at 174 pounds, beating two-time NCAA champion Keegan O'Toole of Missouri 4-1 in sudden victory, avenging a loss from the Big 12 finals two weeks ago. Hamiti nearly scored a takedown in the third period, which was initially awarded before being overturned. Hamiti then secured the match-winning takedown in sudden victory off a scramble.
Hendrickson and Hamiti's national titles gave Oklahoma State 145 NCAA wrestling champions and 492 All-Americans in the program's rich history. Hamiti was a two-time All-American at Wisconsin before transferring to Oklahoma State in 2024.
"A reason why I went to Oklahoma State is because I know they like to win championships," said Hamiti. "They are a very historic program. I'm honored to be a part of it. I'm grateful for all my teammates, all my coaches and really just honored to be a part of this great program."
Lucas Byrd of Illinois topped Big Ten rival Drake Ayala of Iowa 3-2 in tiebreaker to claim the title at 133 pounds. Byrd's last point came from a second stall call on Ayala. He became the first NCAA champion for Illinois since 2016 when Isaiah Martinez won a title.
Byrd is in his sixth season at Illinois. He earned All-America honors in 2021 and 2022. He failed to earn a spot on the podium in 2023 and was out all of last season with an injury.
"It has been one hell of a journey," said Byrd. "It has been one of the most exciting journeys I have ever been on."
NC State's Vince Robinson captured the national title at 125 pounds, edging Oklahoma State's Troy Spratley 2-1 in tiebreaker at 125 pounds.
He said it felt like a dream to become a national champion.
"I was just battling through injuries the whole season," said Robinson. "Coach Espo just told me to stay confident."
