Augsburg blanks Loras

MINNEAPOLIS -- Winning all 10 bouts, with eight coming by bonus-point margins, the top-ranked Augsburg University men's wrestling team dominated in a 46-0 triumph over No. 25-ranked Loras College on Thursday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and top-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association's Division III rankings, won eight of the 10 bouts by bonus-point margins, collecting three pins, two technical falls and three major decisions. The Auggies outscored the Duhawks by a 95-17 margin on Thursday, with 19 takedowns and five near-falls. The Duhawks scored just one reversal and three takedowns in the match.
• Top-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) improved to 9-0 with his fifth pin of the season and 57th of his career, a 4:36 victory over Jake LaMonto. Kim scored an escape and takedown in the second period, converting it into a pin. He is now 113-22 in his Auggie career.
• Kim's pin was the first of three straight for the Auggies, as Derek Steele (JR, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) improved to 11-2 with his fourth pin of the year, a 6:08 win over Carter Anderson, and Wyatt Kaczrowski (JR, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) scored his second pin of the year, improving to 7-4 with a 2:53 match-ender of Kolby Heinz.
• Top-ranked 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) opened Thursday's dual meet with a 16-1, 7:00 technical fall of Drew Venteicher, using four takedowns and a near-fall to build the big lead. He is now 8-1 on the season with seven bonus-point wins (one pin, three technical falls, three major decisions) and 90-29 in his career with 52 bonus-point wins.
• Seeing his first action since the Luther (Iowa) Open on Nov. 11, No. 3-ranked 197-pounder Parker Venz (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 4-1 on the season with a 15-0, second-period technical fall over Kam Royster. Venz recorded two takedowns and a pair of four-point near-falls to end the match early.
• In the first of three meetings of nationally-ranked wrestlers, defending 141-pound national champion and current top-ranked Sam Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) kept his record unblemished at 6-0, pulling away with all 11 points in the third period in an 11-2 major decision over No. 13-ranked Jalen Schropp.
• Charlie Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), who moved into the No. 2 spot in the national rankings at 149 pounds in the most recent NWCA poll, improved to 10-2 on the season with an 11-1 major decision win over No. 10-ranked Eric Kincaid. Stuhl led 3-1 after one period, then scored a takedown in the second and third periods to pull away.
• At 165, No. 3-ranked Cooper Willis (SO, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) continued his strong start to the campaign, improving to 10-1 with a 6-0 win over No. 5-ranked Dustin Bohren, scoring a takedown in the first period and takedown in the third period to secure the win.
• At 174 pounds, No. 4-ranked Seth Goetzinger (JR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) moved to 9-2 on the season with a 19-8 major decision over Landry Barker in the final bout of the night. Goetzinger used four takedowns, a three-point near-fall and three escapes to claim the win, his sixth bonus-point victory (two pins, two technical falls, two major decisions) of the year.
• Kaden Reetz (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) improved to 11-2 on the season with an 8-5 win over No. 9-ranked Gabe Fiser at 157, building a 6-1 lead after one period and holding off a third-period comeback by Fiser.
• Augsburg junior varsity wrestlers won 11 of 13 matches against Rochester Community and Technical College, the No. 17-ranked team in the NJCAA preseason national rankings, in the prelude to Thursday's dual. Auggie wrestlers claimed three pins, five technical falls and two major decisions among their 11 victories over the Yellowjackets.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The shutout victory was Augsburg's first in a dual meet since a 52-0 win over Alma (Mich.) on Feb. 7, 2021, and the first Auggie shutout win over a ranked opponent since a 45-0 win over No. 29-ranked Luther (Iowa) on Jan. 8, 2011.
• Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 363-57-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 52 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly Division III opponents, Augsburg is 349-56-1 since the 1979-80 season and 272-46-1 since 1989-90.
