Millersville earns gritty win over East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Millersville prevailed 23-19 over East Stroudsburg in a nail biting first PSAC dual.

Millersville won on the strength of four technical falls. Millersville is now 3-3 and 1-0 in PSAC action. Millersville holds the edge in the all-time series, 38-37.

The dual started at 165 pounds, and Andrew Vogelbacher had an impressive start at 174, earning the Marauders five points with a 19-4 technical fall over Robert Burke to equalize the score 5-5.

Following that stellar performance was No. 10 Anthony Giampietro at 184. Giampietro wrestled for a 17-1 technical fall over Jarrett Pantuso to put the team up 10-5. Giampietro earned his first technical fall of the season.

Two matches later, the Marauders trailed 11-10 but regained the 13-10 lead from 125-pound Bryce Beatty. With a gritty performance and turning the momentum, Beatty had a deciding takedown in the third period to go up 4-1. Beatty won by decision 4-3 over Jason Athey.

With 10 more points, No. 3 Devin Flannery and Aidan Micheli both logged technical falls. Flannery provided a dominant performance winning 18-1 over Ben Makaritis. Micheli followed with a 16-0 victory over Carlens Lapaix. This put the Marauders up 23-10 to put the win out of reach for the Warriors.

The next time the Marauders take the mat is Sunday, Dec. 17 at the West Liberty Duals.

OVERALL THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JERRY BOLAND

Overall thoughts on the team's performances.

"One of the gutsiest performances I've seen from any team that I've coached. We were down four starters and had zero 149's available. Our guys that needed to get bonus points did (Vogelbacher, Giampietro, and Flannery). Then Micheli clinches it with a tech fall. I'm proud of them. They did what they needed to do."

What do you think was the turning point in this dual?

"I'd have to say the turning point was Bryce's win. We just lost a tough one at Hwt and he got one back for us with a huge win, getting a takedown late in the match. Big time win there. Big time!"

Any key takeaways from this dual?

"The hard work our guys put in showed tonight. We pushed the pace and made things happen. Often times things work in your favor when you wrestle that way and tonight it did for us."

What are you looking forward to in the West Liberty Duals?

"We definitely will take advantage of the two weeks we have to get ready. Our guys will get a chance to recover and hopefully get back to full strength in our lineup. We will have an opportunity to battle one of the top teams in Division II as well as some region teams we don't usually see. So it will be fun."
