Michigan dominates Rider to complete opening-weekend sweep

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team completed its east-coast sweep in decisive fashion, winning seven bouts en route to a 27-14 win at Rider on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19) at the Broncs' Alumni Gymnasium.

Michigan (2-0) claimed seven of the first eight bouts, earning bonus points in four, before Rider won the last two at the lowerweights to narrow the final score.

Freshman Sergio Lemley kicked off the dual with a 19-4 technical fall against 32nd-ranked McKenzie Bell at 141 pounds -- his second ranked win of over his first collegiate dual weekend. Lemley built his lead methodically with two takedowns per period and ended the bout with a single shot, double-leg finish at the 5:35 mark. He is now 6-1 in his collegiate career.

Rider (1-2) earned a decision win from its nationally-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, before the Wolverines reeled off six straight wins to clinch the dual. Graduate student Will Lewan started the surge with an 8-3 decision over Colton Washleski at 157 pounds. Lewan, ranked sixth nationally, scored takedowns in the first and second periods and rode for 1:20 in time advantage.

Fifth-year senior Cameron Amine rolled to an 18-3 technical fall against Cole McComas at 165 pounds to secure his second bonus win on the weekend. Ranked third nationally, Amine finished on five takedowns and added two back points on a bow and arrow late in the second period. He ended the bout with a throw-by counter takedown at the 5:16 mark early in the third period.

Graduate student Shane Griffith, ranked fourth at 174 pounds, earned a 5-3 decision over Michael Wilson to stay perfect in a Michigan singlet with a two-win weekend. Griffith finished on a single in the air midway through the first period and rode out the frame. Wilson narrowed the score with a late takedown in the second, but Griffith added another point at match's end with 1:23 in riding time.

Senior/junior Jaden Bullock used a big first period to cruise to a 12-0 major decision against Isaac Dean at 184 pounds. He finished on an early single-leg takedown and added a four-point tilt late in the frame before icing the bout with another takedown off a late third-period bodylock. Bullock rode for 2:05 and improved to 5-1 on the season.

Graduate student Bobby Striggow earned a 5-0 decision over Brock Zurawski at 197 pounds to claim his second win of the weekend. After a scoreless first period, Striggow converted on a single in the air late in the second, rode out the period and the entire third frame to accumulate 1:54 in time advantage.

Graduate student Lucas Davison, ranked third nationally at heavyweight, dominated 30th-ranked David Szuba 12-1 for his second bonus win in as many matches. Davison scored on single-leg takedowns in the second and third periods and added a four-point leg turk to break it open late. He rode for 3:08 and, like Griffith, is now 2-0 in a Michigan singlet.

In all, seven Wolverines posted 2-0 records over the weekend road trip.

The Wolverines will take a week off over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, at the Westgate Paradise Event Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PST on Friday.
