The Open Mat NCAA Division III Wrestler of the Year: Robbie Precin (North Central)

Robbie Precin has compiled a college wrestling resume that puts him among the greatest NCAA Division III wrestlers of this era. The North Central wrestler repeated as national champion at 133 pounds, finishing this season 35-0. It was his second consecutive undefeated national championship season after going 38-0 last season. Precin had 19 bonus victories in his 35 matches this season. He had 10 pins, six technical falls and three major decisions. Precin won tournament titles at the Pointer Open, CUW Open and North Central Invitational. He then captured his fourth consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) title with a 4-1 win over Augustana's Trevor Boryla. Precin went 4-0 at the Lower Midwest Regional Championships, beating Dylan Koontz of Dubuque 7-2 in the finals. At the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, Precin picked up first-period pins in his first two matches to reach the semifinals. He cruised to a 6-2 semifinal victory over Tyler Fleetwood of UW-Eau Claire to advance to the national championship match for the second consecutive season. In the finals, Precin faced York's Dalton Rohrbaugh. After a scoreless first period, Rohrbaugh escaped to go up 1-0. Precin scored a takedown in the final 20 seconds of the second period to grab a 2-1 lead. He would add an escape early in the third period claim a 3-1 victory. Precin's national title helped North Central to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, the best finish in program history. Precin amassed a record of 120-2 over the past four seasons and became North Central's first four-time NCAA All-American. Precin has another season of eligibility remaining if he chooses to use it.
